Mary Muhlenhaupt has been an occupational therapist for 34 years, working with both school-aged children and school staffs, and with families and their infants and toddlers. A Doctor of Occupational Therapy, Mary is an Assistant Professor of Occupational Therapy at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mary advocates for programs for children with special needs that are built upon cooperative practices between families and school personnel. She promotes “best practice,” based on contemporary occupational therapy theory, recommended approaches established by the American Occupational Therapy Association and researched-based methods that meet students’ needs in school settings and support infants and toddlers within the context of everyday family life and routines. She has a particular interest in applying and documenting research-based approaches into early intervention and school system practice in accordance with IDEA 2004. She is interested and experienced in working with systems as they implement evidence-based strategies, especially when these approaches challenge traditional practices.

Professional Services Mary provides occupational therapy evaluations and services upon request to schools and families in the suburban Philadelphia area and offers a program of consultation and training to help school teams in other regions as they develop and enhance therapy and education collaboration in their own programs.
Publications Mary has published peer-reviewed articles in professional magazines and journals, self-study materials and textbook chapters, nationally and internationally. Her topics include contemporary models of school-based therapy services, collaborative decision-making to develop IEPs and other issues related to education programs for students with disabilities. She is nationally recognized within the occupational therapy profession as a presenter who is able to articulate occupational therapy perspectives in school system and early intervention practice. |
